Bio

Elizabeth Hawkes has had a full and varied career in visual arts. She has painted all her life, winning her first art prize at the age of eight. After completing year 12 she trained as a graphic designer, illustrator, and photographer – and now is a highly respected and very experienced fine artist.
She has been a Creative Director working in Advertising in Sydney and then she had a magazine publishing company for 20 years which published many titles including Highlife in Bowral and Capital Magazine in Canberra.
Elizabeth’s portraiture photography has been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery of Australia and her general magazine photography work was acknowledged as one of the best in its genre.
Ever since Elizabeth started exhibiting her large flower and succulent paintings at the Discovery Gallery in Noosa Heads (she was one of the gallery’s most sought after artists) she has been committing more and more of her time to her painting. She has most recently been spending everyday at her easel.
She studied under Chris Browne at Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney. Before that she was painting with Roy Churcher in a regular group he organised, plus attending drawing workshops at the National Portrait Gallery and Canberra Art Workshop. She won best in show at the Canberra Art Workshop’s 60th anniversary exhibition.
She likes working with natural light and pure colours. Her style is realistic and not confrontational and demonstrates a highly developed sense of technical and visual competency.
Elizabeth still works as a Graphic Designer, Photographer and Illustrator.
